Larval Lobster Research Contractor in West Boothbay Harbor, ME

This is a 40 hour/5 days a week position which may include one weekend day
$22 hourly
May 1 – September 30, 2026
The Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) Bureau of Marine Science - Lobster Research Program conducts life history research on the American lobster in support of survey and management objectives.
Seeking to fill one short-term position to assist with several projects in
the DMR Lobster Research program with Dr. Heather Glon. The primary focus will be to carry out DMR’s Larval Lobster Survey and assist with an associated small lobster tagging project in collaboration with the University of Maine. This position will be based at the ME DMR West Boothbay Harbor lab.

•The primary duties of this position are to carry out the weekly Larval Lobster Survey by: organizing equipment and data sheets, joining the ocean-based survey (approximately 7am – 2pm once a week), sorting, measuring, and maintaining live and preserved samples, and processing environmental data. Tasks are divided between laboratory and field depending on needs.
•Secondary duties related to the larval tagging research project include: setting up and maintaining experimental tanks, feeding, monitoring and measuring lobsters, and recording both biological and abiotic data. Participation in the tagging method involves delicate dissecting scope work.
•Other duties include organizing supplies, processing preserved samples in the lab, and occasionally assisting with other DMR projects as needs and opportunities arise.

Requirements
* At least two years of experience and/or education in laboratory or field-based research. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
* Ability to follow written procedures, keep detailed records, check work carefully, and recognize errors or inconsistencies.
* Ability to work independently, manage time, and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
* Clear written and verbal communication skills in a collaborative work environment.
*The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s license.
* Preferred Experience:
*Small boating experience actively working in variable weather conditions (up to 3ft seas).
*Experience in roles where accuracy, organization, and consistency were essential day-to-day.
*Regular use of Microsoft Office tools for data entry, tracking, and error checking.
*Data analysis in R, or an interest in learning, is preferred.
*Demonstrated responsibility for organizing equipment, supplies, or workspaces.
*Prior responsibility for managing datasets that are relied upon by team members.
